Park Min Hyuk (박민혁; born February 25, 1999), better known by his stage name Rocky (라키), is a South Korean singer-songwriter, rapper, dancer, choreographer, composer, and model under ONE FINE DAY Entertainment. He is the former main dancer, lead rapper, and vocalist of the South Korean boy group ASTRO and its sub-unit JinJin & Rocky.
He left the group on February 28, 2023, after deciding not to renew his contract with Fantagio.
He made his solo debut on November 22, 2023 with a mini album Rockyst.
Early life[]
Park Min Hyuk was born on February 25, 1999 in Jinju, South Gyeongsang-do, South Korea.[4] He attended Baeyong Elementary School, Eonbuk Middle School, and Seoul Music High School. In October 2015, he transferred to Hanlim Multi Art School, where he graduated with a focus on Practical Music.[5]
Career[]
2010–15: Pre-debut[]
In 2010, when he was in fifth grade, Rocky qualified for the final audition round for the South Korean adaptation of the musical Billy Elliot.[6] The same year, he became a trainee under Fantagio.[3] He also participated in the Daegu regional audition for Korea's Got Talent on July 14, 2011.[7] On January 17, 2015, Rocky became the first trainee to be officially introduced through the Fantagio iTeen Photo Test Cut, the same day the trainee concert Lotte World Rising Start Concert was held.[8]
Prior to his debut, he starred in the web drama To Be Continued alongside his fellow group members.[9]
2016–present: Debut with ASTRO and solo activities[]
On February 23, 2016, Rocky debuted as part of the six-member boy group ASTRO with their first extended play Spring Up.[10] On August 24, he portrayed The Mask on the fifth and sixth episode of the Mnet dance show Hit the Stage.[11] His performance was praised by the judges, who especially pointed out his accurate impression of the character and powerful execution of the dance.[12]
In 2018, Rocky participated in the 1theK dance competition show Dance War under the pseudonym "Purple23." Although he won the judges' evaluation in the final round, he was surpassed with 1,000 audience votes by Samuel, placing second.[13][14] On November 30, 2018, he released the self-written digital single "Star" in collaboration with Chawoo, which was later included on the album FM201.8.[15] During the "The 2nd ASTROAD to SEOUL: STAR LIGHT" concert tour, he performed the original song "Have A Good Day," which he also composed.[16] The studio recording of the song was included on the concert's DVD, which was released in June 2019.[17]
In 2019, Rocky composed one of the tracks for ASTRO's sixth EP Blue Flame, titled "When The Wind Blows."[18]
On June 24, 2020, Rocky was announced as the MC for the Chinese-Korean hallyu program Idol Going To Work (爱豆上班啦).[19][20] On September 29, he released his first OST "Shiny Blue" for the web drama Dok Go Bin Is Updating.[21]
On April 5, 2021, he wrote and produced the song "Our Spring" for ASTRO's second studio album All Yours.[22] The music video to the song was released on May 23, 2021, and was also filmed, produced, and edited by Rocky.[23] He also appeared on the 305th and 306th episode of King of Mask Singer under the alias "Undutiful Child Cries."[24] Rocky also composed the promotional single "7Days Tension" for the girl group Weeekly, which was released on May 28 as part of a commercial for the eyewear brand Davich.[25][26]
